Mistaken Point Casting Project -September 2009

Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve is home to the oldest evidence known of early multi-cellular life on the planet. The rocks at Mistaken Point contain fossils of the oldest, largest and best preserved examples of Ediacaran life forms on Earth, dated from 565-579 million years old. It was established as a Provincial Ecological Reserve in 1987 to protect this diverse and globally significant fossil assemblage. The Reserve is located along the southeast coast of the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland between Cape Race and Portugal Cove South, an area known as Edge of Avalon.

Fossils at Mistaken Point are vulnerable to the forces of erosion – both natural and that caused by human foot traffic. The goal of the casting project was to replicate the main fossil surface at Mistaken Point in order to create a permanent record of this site of international importance. Research Casting International was hired to produce this replica which was the largest of its type ever made. Copies of the cast will support ongoing scientific research and education.
